In the age of information where people are informed about almost everything that
goes on, it is easy for an individual to claim to be an expert in a particular field. An expert,
however, is someone who has a prolonged experienced through practice and education in a
specific field. Sometimes courts admit experts to the courtroom to help in providing
specialized knowledge to explain complicated situations. Such experts help members of the
jury to understand the technical aspects of a complicated case so that they can make
deliberations based on facts. Due to the seriousness of the consequences of a criminal court
case, the court has to adhere to strict standards for qualifying who an expert is and what
testimony is admitted to a lawsuit. This paper seeks to discuss the standards and rules used to
