Question description

Assignment 1: Content Review

Directions:

  • Respond to each item. Each response should be concise and 2–3 paragraphs in length.
  • Use MS Word to write your responses, and submit your answers to all three questions in one Word document.
  • Copy and paste each question into the document, so your Instructor can see which questions you are answering.
  1. Identify and briefly describe three specific trends in child poverty and/or homelessness in the U.S. over the past 5–10 years. For each trend, describe one possible implication of the trend for children's growth and development.
  2. Identify at least three ways in which poor families match or exceed more affluent families in areas relating to family or community life. For each way, provide at least one possible reason for this trend.
  3. Identify and describe at least three specific consequences of child poverty and/or homelessness for children and/or for society-at-large.

Assignment 2: Linking Trends and Issues Through Research

To begin this assignment, choose one specific trend/issue relating to children's health or children's family/peer relationships. It can be one that you studied in this course (i.e. obesity, autism, ADHD, nontraditional family structures, parental relations, etc.), or it can be another children's health or relationship trend/issue of interest to you. Using the Walden Library, Internet, and/or print resources, locate a recent article or research study that draws a connection between your chosen health or relationship trend/issue and the larger world as it affects children, specifically technology/media influences or issues related to child poverty.

After you have chosen the article, write a 3- to 4-page summary and analysis of the article that includes responses to the following questions:

  • What specific connection(s) does the article draw between your chosen health or relationship trend/issue and a trend/issue related to the larger world? Provide a brief summary.
  • Do these findings surprise you? Do they confirm what you already suspected? Explain.
  • What are the implications of these findings for practice in schools, homes, youth programs, etc.? Identify and describe at least two specific implications including at least one for professionals who work with school-age children in a setting of your choice.
  • Do you think further research is needed? If so, why, and what kind? If not, why not?

Child poverty

Identify and briefly describe three specific trends in child poverty and/or homelessness in
the U.S. over the past 5–10 years. For each trend, describe one possible implication of the
trend for children's growth and development.
The official poverty measure becomes utilized in assessing the trends in the rates of child
poverty for several years. Due to some statistical errors in measuring the child poverty trends in
the United States, the Current Population Survey Dataset becomes the most preferred technique
in calculating the child poverty measure to re-examine the rates of child poverty since the
previous years (Moore et al., 2009). First and foremost, according to early child poverty trends,
American child poverty decreased from 29.9% in 1960 to about 19.9% in 2009. During this time,
approximately 1 in 3 children stayed in families with wages below the federal poverty line,
which arose as a result of the great recession in 2007. In the previous child poverty rates, no
financial resources were stemming from the government policies to help the needy families in
improving the child's growth and development.
However, in 2009, these government programs and policies' resources started erupting,
and then made the child poverty rate to begin dropping substantially. As a result of the
government resources, these children began receiving education thus improving them socially,
and emotionally. Secondly, in 2012, the child poverty continued to decrease to nearly 16.0%.
Similarly, the subsequent policies and programs were the major poverty reduction cause. They
ensured vital support of improving the lives of the vulnerable U.S. children and their families,
especially in sections entailing the nutrition help, housing access, child assistance for the
families, health care coverage as well as the employment assistance (Moore et al., 2009). Lastly,

in 2014, the child poverty level continued to decrease to about 14.8%. Likewise, during this time,
the Safety Net Programs reduced the child poverty, which impacted the poverty rates among the
U.S. citizens. Some of these programs include the TANF among others.
Identify at least three ways in which low-income families match or exceed more affluent
families in areas relating to family or community life. For each way, provide at least one
possible reason for this trend.
A healthy and sophisticated community requires individual and household lives to
