Running head: PSYCHOLOGY
Identify and briefly describe three specific trends in child poverty and/or homelessness in
the U.S. over the past 5–10 years. For each trend, describe one possible implication of the
trend for children's growth and development.
The official poverty measure becomes utilized in assessing the trends in the rates of child
poverty for several years. Due to some statistical errors in measuring the child poverty trends in
the United States, the Current Population Survey Dataset becomes the most preferred technique
in calculating the child poverty measure to re-examine the rates of child poverty since the
previous years (Moore et al., 2009). First and foremost, according to early child poverty trends,
American child poverty decreased from 29.9% in 1960 to about 19.9% in 2009. During this time,
approximately 1 in 3 children stayed in families with wages below the federal poverty line,
which arose as a result of the great recession in 2007. In the previous child poverty rates, no
financial resources were stemming from the government policies to help the needy families in
improving the child's growth and development.
However, in 2009, these government programs and policies' resources started erupting,
and then made the child poverty rate to begin dropping substantially. As a result of the
government resources, these children began receiving education thus improving them socially,
and emotionally. Secondly, in 2012, the child poverty continued to decrease to nearly 16.0%.
Similarly, the subsequent policies and programs were the major poverty reduction cause. They
ensured vital support of improving the lives of the vulnerable U.S. children and their families,
especially in sections entailing the nutrition help, housing access, child assistance for the
families, health care coverage as well as the employment assistance (Moore et al., 2009). Lastly,
in 2014, the child poverty level continued to decrease to about 14.8%. Likewise, during this time,
the Safety Net Programs reduced the child poverty, which impacted the poverty rates among the
U.S. citizens. Some of these programs include the TANF among others.
Identify at least three ways in which low-income families match or exceed more affluent
families in areas relating to family or community life. For each way, provide at least one
possible reason for this trend.
