The Salem witch craze of 1692 in the colonial Massachusetts saw more than 200 people
accused and 20 of them executed for practicing witchcraft. For several centuries, most religions
including Christians believed that witches could receive power from the Devil to harm others.
This belief had bred a witchcraft in Europe that saw tens thousands executed in about 300 years
(Godbeer 13). The hysteria in Europe was dying down when the Salem witch craze came up.
Although informed by belief that the Devil gave witches power to harm, the Salem witch craze
of 1692 was caused by the local circumstances at the time.
