Question description

In this Assignment, you will apply the information you have learned regarding boundaries and dual relationships to the analysis of a real life scenario:

Ms. C was a case manager at an outpatient clinic that provided a variety of services. One of her clients was Ms. R, who was receiving services as a result of a recent divorce. Ms. C had also experienced a divorce in her past and thought she had effectively dealt with that experience, but found herself identifying with many comments made by Ms. R.

Through their work together, the two women realized they shared many common interests. They often found themselves talking about these shared interests in their time together and eventually began meeting for coffee after their sessions. Ms. R soon suggested they begin spending additional time together socially and Ms. C agreed. Before long, they became fast friends, spending a significant amount of social time together on evenings and weekends, visiting clubs, going to movies or visiting local restaurants.

After several months, the two had a falling out about a gentleman both women favored. Ms. R filed a complaint with the Regulatory agency in her state about the relationship.

In a 4–6 page paper, analyze the implications of these events. Use the internet and the Library to investigate the harmful effects of such a relationship on all parties involved: Ms. R, the helping relationship and for Ms. C. Discuss both the social and emotional impacts of such a relationship as well as their effects on the treatment relationship. Use specific examples. Discuss the likely outcome of Ms. R’s complaint if it was filed in your state. Finally, discuss strategies to minimize the likelihood of such a relationship arising in your practice.

Your Assignment should:

Be presented in the form of a well-written graduate level document

Use an essay format, 12 point font, and double spacing

Be 4–6 pages in length, not including the title and reference pages

Include a title page and reference page

Including at least two references in support of your observations and conclusions using proper APA citation and reference formatting

All work should be in your own words with quotes used very sparingly. Please be sure to answer every question within the body of your paper.

In the Reading, you will examine how intimate and social relationships can occur in interactions with human services clients and how they impact the helping relationship. Chapter 2 in your text, Boundary Issues and Dual Relationships in the Human Services, will cover the issue of intimate relationships with clients. In Chapter 3, you will also discover that relationships in which the helping professional’s emotional and dependency needs are being met can impact the helping relationship in a negative manner.

Boundaries and Dual Relationships
The relationship between the mental health practitioner and their client is critical because
it not only affects the quality of care but also affects the social and emotional stability of either or
both. The personal issues of the professional may also get in the way of caregiving hence
affecting the relationship between them and their client. Intimate relationships, emotional and
dependence issues, and the risks surrounding boundary issues and dual relationships are all to
consider when practicing in human services. As a rule of the thumb, the professional should
minimize any relationship that may cause harm or reduce the benefit to the client for professional
conduct. The case study details a case where the dual relationship and boundary issues
introduced harmful effects on the treatment relationship and the lives of both the client and the
human services professional.
The implications of the conflict of interest and the adverse effects of the troubled
relationship between Ms. C and Ms. R are based on the harmful effects of the failure by the
professional to maintain healthy boundaries with the client. According to National Organization
for Human Services (NOHS) (2015) responsibility to the clients, “human service professionals
recognize that multiple relationships may increase the risk of harm to or exploitation of clients
and may impair their professional judgment.” In the case of Ms. C, she failed to recognize the
harm posed by the close relationship with her client and the social interactions. The implication
of the falling out in her case is that she may develop biases when dealing with Ms. R and thus
her ability to provide adequate care will be diminished. Professionally, she may fail in her
capacity to offer care that is devoid of conflict of interest and also accurately judges her client’s
needs. Personally, she may be emotionally affected to the point that she may not separate
personal issues from the issues affecting the client.
