Logan has $2.55 in dimes and nickles. How many dimes does he have if there are 12 less than double the number of nickles

1 Nickel = 5 cents

1 dime = 10 cents

$1 = 100 cents

1 dime = 2 Nickel

Number of dimes = 2*Number of nickels - 12

Lets represent -

Number of dimes = d

Number of nickels = n

therefore, d = 2n-12

so, d+n = $2.55

or, 10*d + 5*n = 255 cents .....................(covert both sides into number of cents)

or, 10*(2n-12) + 5n = 255

or, 20n-120+5n = 255  => 25n = 375    => n = 15

therefore, d = 2n-12 = 2*15-12 = 18

Number of dimes = 18

Number of Nickels = 15
