The farmers did not realize that the land in Texas Colorado and Oklahoma was light. They therefore overexploted it by keeping a lot of cattle(ranching). When drought struck(1934) the soil dried.Then winds blew up the light top soil hence causing a devastating dust storm that affected many activities in a large agricultural land and its environs (the dustbowl).
