A case analysis on Amazon’s market power, a threat to justice for stakeholders
1. What is/are the ethical issue(s) in the case?
The ethical issues which affect Amazon’s market power include its unique
organisation culture. The company employs and promotes competent and talented workers
only. However, there are some staff from the human resource department, who bend the
company’s rules and policies, when the skilled and talented workers misbehave. Moreover,
Amazon’s top management are sometimes biased and also push their employees beyond their
working limits, to produce quality results for the company. The most urgent issue of focus
when analyzing the ethical issues in Amazon includes the brutal and combative culture,
where workers are pressurized by the executives to achieve the ambitions and dreams of the
company. The competitive pressure raises ethical issues because it causes emotional distress
which makes grown men cry, due to the burden from the managers (Tobak, 2017).
The utilitarian theory is a suitable model that explains the ethical issues affecting
Amazon Company. According to Mitchell (2018), Amazon controls online retail sales which
attract most online customers. The monopoly power puts the company at an advantage over
other companies. Nonetheless, the company uses this advantage to syphon off the most

political economy, rather than an environment which is premised on a public rule. The
strategies used by Amazon is a clear indication of utilitarianism. According to Tittle (2000),
utilitarian theory considers options which bring more benefit to the company and less loss.
The theory analyses the strengths, elements and the weakness of a specific task, then makes
an ethical decision using the consequences which may result from a particular choice.

The pertinent facts of the case involve Amazon’s market power characterized by
monopoly, which threatens the justice of other stakeholders. According to Mitchell (2018),
Amazon has allowed counterfeit Birkenstocks from overseas sellers into the site, threatening
other companies like Gazelle sports and Nike. The less essential facts of the case involve
Amazon’s use of below-cost selling strategy, to absorb and merge its competitors like Zappos
and Quidsi. The absorption and emergence with these companies resulted in a restraining
effect such as the inability to find other investors.
According to Mitchell (2018), there is a specific code of ethics, which guides business
actors. An example of these code includes the antitrust law, an industrial code of ethics which
generally inhibits a destructive technology, giving some companies absolute power to access
and weaken its competitors. The code of ethics protects companies explicitly from ind...
