Muscle Dysmorphic Disorder is also called bigorexia or reverse anorexia. It is
disorder in which a person is regularly worried or obsessed about being
underdeveloped or underweight. Usually, people having muscle dysmorphia are not
underdeveloped or underweight instead they have large body mass. It is just
their fear or perception that they are underweight. This disorder mostly occurs
in men who do gym or lifts weights. There are few cases of this disorder in
women. “It is estimated that 1 out of every 50 bodybuilders feels small no
matter how much they work out or how muscular they are” (Bodybuilding.com,
2009). Low self esteem is one of the cause of this disorder in men.
disorder is treatable as the treatment team needs to identify the cause of the
disorder. Then the person is taught with coping methods and behaviors in order
to treat the disorder and avoid its relapse in future.
