A 0.226 kg baseball is thrown with a
speed of 10.9 m/s. It is hit straight back at
the pitcher with a final speed of 9.65 m/s.
a) What is the magnitude of the impulse delivered to the ball?Answer in units of kg ·m/s.

b) Find the average force exerted by the bat on
the ball if the two are in contact for 0.00161s.
Answer in units of N.

Final momentum = mass times velocity = 0.226*10.9 =2.4634 kg m/s

Initial momentum = mass times velocity = 0.226 *(-10.9)  = -2.4634 kg m/s

Impulse = change in momentum = final momentum - initial momentum 

= 2.4634+2.4634 = 4.9268 kg m /sec

Average force = Impulse/ time = 4.9268 / 0.00161 =3060.124 kg m/sec2 or 3060.12 N
