Description

Post your response to the following discussion questions:

  1. What are the main causes of fires and/or explosions in today's work organizations? Be sure to support your answer. Your answer may be in the context of industrial organizations in general. You may also make your answer specific to the industry in which you work or aspire to work, or make it specific to the aviation/aerospace industry.
  2. Based on the answer you provided to the above question, as a safety, health, and environmental professional, what would you do to curtail the fire causal factor you identified in your first response?Your answer should illustrate that you can contrast the differences between fire prevention and fire protection.

Main Causes of Fires and/or Explosions in Today’s Work Organizations
Explosions and fires in industries cost governments and companies a lot of money
annually, and many lives are lost. These disasters occur due to various reasons, but they often
happen because the employees and managers don’t know the risks that surround their places of
work daily (Reason, 2016). Generally, the main causes of fires and explosions in work
organizations today include hot work, combustible dust, and equipment and machinery.
Across all industries, hot work is among the leading causes of industrial fires (Troitzsch,
2016). Hot work does not only entail torch cutting and welding, but also burning, brazing,
soldering, and heating among other activities that may cause a fire. The molten material and
sparks can easily travel. In cases of combustible dust fire, hot work is a major culprit as the
generated sparks can easily ignite the dust within the area of work. For instance, in an instance in
North Carolina, welders got seriously burnt after wood dust was ignited by sparks (Troitzsch,
2016).
