Quiz Instructions

Step 1: Trigonometric Functions

  1. Draw a right triangle. Roll a die two times and record the numbers you roll. On the drawing of your right triangle, label the legs of the triangle using the numbers you rolled. Use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the length of the hypotenuse, and write out the steps you performed using words. You must show all work to receive credit.
  2. Draw another right triangle. Roll a die one time and record the number you roll. Label one of the legs of a right triangle with the number you rolled. Now, roll the die two more times and record the numbers you roll. Use the two numbers you rolled to create an angle measure for your triangle. On the drawing of your right triangle, label the leg, and angle of the triangle using the numbers you rolled. Find the length of the missing leg and find the missing angle measure. Write a paragraph telling how you found the missing values. You must show all work to receive credit.
  3. Draw another right triangle. Roll a die two times and record the numbers you roll. On the drawing of your right triangle, label the legs of the triangle using the numbers you rolled. Use the Pythagorean Theorem and trigonometric functions to find the length of the hypotenuse and the missing angle measures. Write a paragraph telling how you found the missing values. You must show all work to receive credit.

Step 2: Special Right Triangles

There are two special right triangles. Use the following two activities to discover their names and to learn about their characteristics.

A right triangle is shown. Both legs are labeled 1 and the hypotenuse is labeled c. The two non right angles inside the triangle are labeled a and b.

  1. Draw a right triangle and label the legs 1 and 1. Find the missing side length for c and the missing angle measures for a and b in the image above. Write a paragraph telling how you found the missing values. You must show all work to receive credit.

A right triangle is shown. One leg is labeled 1, another leg is labeled square root 3, and the hypotenuse is labeled c. The two angles inside the triangle are labeled a and b.
  2. Draw a right triangle and label the legs 1 and square root 3. Find the missing side length for c and the missing angle measures for a and b in the image above. Write a paragraph telling how you found the missing values. You must show all work to receive credit.

Step 3: Answering the Questions

Answer the following questions. Make sure you use complete sentences and thoughts.

  1. Why are some right triangles called special right triangles? What are the names of the two special right triangles you discovered in step 2? You may use the web to research this answer. Any sources used must be referenced in your writing. Make sure to summarize your finding and place all thoughts in your own words.
  2. The word cosine literally means "the complement of the sine". Write a paragraph explaining how complements of sine and cosine are connected. Be sure to include a concrete example in your explanation.
