Many factors lead to people becoming immigrants for instance in the 1800s many European
countries were undergoing a lot of problems like the famine caused by the failure in the potato
production and Eastern Europe experience political instability full of violence. During these
periods being an immigrant was not an easy thing as the locals were mistreating the immigrants.
But putting into account that the U.S had plenty of lands and some Europeans had some relatives
already established in the U.S they found a more natural way out of their problems.
The immigrants during this time were discriminated against, even though they were
allowed to stay in the cities their lives were miserable as they lived in dirty and crowded tenements
and this affected them mentally as this made them suffer from low self-esteem and psychological
issues (Anbinder, 2002). Living in such conditions was not suitable for the proper development of
the children as well as adults as this can make them feel like they are a lesser human being and
