The main types of labor unions are industrial unions, public sector unions, and craft
unions. The industrial unions represent individuals in industrial sectors like food service and
transportation. Examples of industrial labor unions include the International Brotherhood of
Teamsters, the Organization of Chemical and Atomic Workers, etc. Public sector unions
represent workers in government agencies such as public schools. The major public unions in the
United States are the American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees (AFSCME)
that represents workers in county, city and state governments and the National Education
Association which represents the employees in public schools. Moreover, craft unions represent
workers in skilled trades (2019). In the U.S., craft unions include the United Auto Workers, the
International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, and the International Association of Machinists.
Generally, the labor unions fight or advocate for the rights of the workers to protect them from
exploitation.
