Taking the cost of healthcare into account in the United States is a significant and crucial
part of health care planning. The high cost of healthcare in the country has been regarded as
unsustainable by many despite the fact that several government programs such as Medicare and
Medicaid were put in place to help finance American’s health care, same as private health
insurance and the person’s own funds. Many people in the United States were uninsured until the
Affordable Care Act become effective. This saw the number drop as many people were insured
under the ACA, which has been changing the country healthcare organization significantly. The
efforts of the ACA of 2010 focused on moving healthcare towards financial stability as a way of
stemming the rising healthcare cost (Emrick, 2017). Some of the impacts of the ACA on healthcare
organization and finance include:
First, ACA expanded health insurance coverage, where millions of people primarily lowincome individuals or poor who had no affordable coverage option could buy health insurance
under Medicaid extended eligibility. Due to the extended coverage, bad debts in hospitals rapidly
decreased since most Americans now have a source to bill for services provided, which most were
not able to pay before in case of emergency services. However, this increased state Medicaid
spending as they participated in the expansion as legislated in the Affordable Care Act. The second
impact is that it changed the individual need to-always go through their employer in order to be
