Social Development Theory (Lev Vygotsky) This theory argues that social interaction plays a fundamental role in the development of cognition. Vygotsky states that: “Every function in the child’s cultural development appears twice: first, on the social level, and later, on the individual level; first, between people (interpsychological) and then inside the child (intrapsychological)”. According to Vygotsky, learning occurred in the “zone of proximal development” (ZPD) which is the distance between a student’s ability to perform a task under adult guidance or with peer collaboration and the student’s ability solving the problem independently. Therefore, I think using flexible grouping in my class will increase students learning abilities. Modes of Learning (D. Rumelhart & D. Norman) This theory illustrates that there are three modes of learning: accretion, structuring and tuning. Accretion is the addition of new knowledge to existing memory. Structuring involves the formation of new conceptual structures or schema. Tuning is the adjustment of knowledge to a specific task usually through practice. Therefore, I’ll design the instruction to accommodate different modes of learning.
