Assignment:

In teams, compose a research-based essay and informational brochure focusing on ‘Direct and Indirect Child Guidance’.

Part 1: Essay

In your essay, provide a comprehensive explanation of the two different types of guidance (direct and indirect), what each entails, and how teachers or caregivers can implement these in the early childhood setting.

Your essay should be 1250-1500 words and should include at least three (3) citations. The sections should be clearly marked with headings so that your instructor knows which points you are addressing. Follow the guidelines for APA writing style. The title page and references page do not count towards the minimum word amount for this assignment.

Part 2: Physical Classroom Model

Create a research-based classroom model (i.e., a visual model of the classroom with identified areas of that physical space and a caption for each part of the room explaining your rationale for where everything is placed). Write a 500-750 word description of each part of the room and explain why you chose that design element as it relates to promoting positive guidance for young children.

Use Word or PowerPoint to design a single page visual layout of an ideal classroom that focuses on creating direct and indirect support for properly guiding children’s academic, social, and behavioral development. Be sure to make this realistic, detailed in terms of including all necessary components in this physical space, colorful, and include a solid balance between text and graphics. References must be attached.

Direct and Indirect Guidance
Introduction
As a child develops, the ultimate goal is to ensure that the child gains self-control,
assumes responsibility, and can make well-thought-out decisions. For the child to be able to
attain the ultimate goals there is a need for appropriate guidance. Direct and indirect guidance
techniques provide for strategies and tools that one can use to prevent, resolve, and correct
certain behaviors in children. Indirect guidance strategies are those strategies that help to build a
positive learning environment such as room arrangement, having consistent routines, the
environmental rules, and activities aimed at development. Direct guidance strategies help to
build on the positive learning environment such as having realistic expectations, focusing on
individual children, and recognition of appropriate behaviors. There is a need to better
understand direct and indirect child guidance strategies for improved child outcomes.
Discussion
Early childhood teachers play an important role in the development of a child. Through
adequate guidance, a child is able to develop discipline and have high self-esteem, develop
responsible behavior, and demonstrate thoughtful choices in their decision-making. When
working with a young child, it is enjoyable to see them learn new things and see them use their
creativity to interact and communicate with others. However, it is not enjoyable to deal with the
challenges of inappropriate behavior presented by children. The main goal is to have the
children be able to self-regulate and guide their own behavior.
Through guidance is it possible to teach children various mechanisms for solving their
own problems in ways that are socially acceptable. The guidance methods have to adhere to

maintaining the child’s self-esteem and dignity. This can be guided by discipline methods to help
the child learn how to control their behavior and act accordingly. A form of punishment can be
used to penalize a child for making the wrong choice but is a detrimental way that may foster
resentment and retaliation. Punishment may make a child stop the inappropriate behavior in the
short-term but will not offer appropriate learning experiences.
Behavioral issues may be caused by several factors. Having unrealistically high
expectations for the child, having a learning environment that is too open or too enclosed, having
learning material that is not adequate for the children, having too much time between schedules,
having inflexible routines, and having little organization in the classroom can cause behavioral
issues in early childhood (Arizona Child Care Association, 2017). Additionally, having
inconsistent waiting times between schedules and having extremely challenging or underchallenging learning activities can cause behavioral issues amo...
