According to the study referenced in the text book, the girls ranging from the ages of 7.5-8.5 who were exposed to Barbie dolls were not effected. I think this speaks to the fact that younger girls are more impressionable. I personally don't see an issue with letting little girls play with Barbie or Bratz dolls. It would probably be in the child's best interest to wait until she has developed a moderately strong sense of self.

Barbie dolls are both destructive and positive to the child upbringing. its always said that whatever you teach a child when he/she is young will always stick on her mind. in response i would definitely say that exposing your child to dolls when they are still younger than the required age may affect child or not affect the child when they grow up. So it highly depends on the individual perception. But all at large it would be a good when you expose your child to barbie dolls when they have developed a moderately stronger sense of self.
