Good programming practices, help with legibility. In other words it helps the other person reading your code, read it with ease. Comments in particular are very useful for understand code as you read it. It eases reading if you give variable names such as "velocity", "max Height" and "score Total". Good Programming practices are also useful in deciphering what something actually is. If someone has followed good programming practices, they will label any constants by writing them in ALL_CAPS. This makes it easy to note that something is a constant variable. Without programming standards this would not be the case and the programming world would be a chaotic place. People sometimes don't follow good programming practices and also don't comment their damn code, so you have to spend hours figuring out just what everything is. That is why standards are important.
