Peter goes on a diet to lose weight. Let the input t represent the week of his diet, and let the output W represent Peter's weight in pounds. At the start of his diet (t = 0), Peter weighed 215 pounds. After 6 weeks on his diet, he weighed 197 pounds. Find the linear relationship between t and W.

Let W = mt + b be the linear relationship between t and W.

When t = 0 , W = 215

Therefore   215 = (0)t + b

b = 215

==> W = mt + 215

When t = 6, W = 197

Therefore 197 = m(6) + 215

197 - 215 = 6m

-18 = 6m

m = -3

==> W = -3t + 215

A community college charges \$26.00 per unit plus a \$40.00 health fee. Let the input u represent the number of units enrolled in, and let the output T represent the tuition (charges) for that semester.

(a) Find the equation of the line that describes this relationship.

(b) Interpret the slope in terms of the problem situation.

The slope represents that the cost of tuition increases by  dollars for each unit.

(c) Interpret the intercepts in terms of the problem situation. (For any answers that need to be rounded, round to the nearest integer.)

The point
(u, T) =

is the u-intercept. The interpretation of this point is that if a student enrolls in  units, the cost of tuition would be  dollars.
The point

(u, T) =

is the T-intercept. The interpretation of this point is that if a student enrolls in  units, the cost of tuition would be  dollars.
