Description

I would like to discuss the following topics and questions:

  • Explain how GMOs are created.
  • What is the purpose of genetically engineering crops and what are the benefits?
  • Are foods that contain GMOs safe for human consumption?
  • Are there any regulations on genetically modified crops?
  • What is the future of genetically engineering food crops? I am attaching my proposal sent to my professor: My project will be on the subject of GMO’s or genetically modified organisms. Because this is such a broad subject, the project will be narrowed down to the use of GMO’s on crops and livestock that humans will consume.
    Course Connections:
Module Objective/ Learning Outcome – Demonstrate factual knowledge of genetics.
My project is going to go into detail about what GMO’s are and how they are created. Creating GMO’s involves using genetic engineering to modify an organism’s DNA or Deoxyribonucleic Acid which is basically the molecule of life.
Module objective/Learning Outcome - Recognize the inescapable relationship between society and the environment.
Since my project is being narrowed down to the use of GMO’s in products that humans consume such as livestock and crops, the relationship with society and the environment for this project will deal with a growing population and dwindling resources.
    Real World Connections:
As I stated above, Earth’s human population is growing and with that comes an increase in demand for food. A growing population also means that we have to use more land to house the increased numbers. This creates less available land for growing crops and raising livestock.
The good news is that with technology and research, we have been able to come up with a solution to help minimize the problem. The use of GMO’s allows crops and livestock to grow faster and bigger. The problem is that there might be health affects on people who consume them.

Background Information

A genetically modified organism (GMO) can be
defined as a living being whose genetic composition
has been changed with the use of genetic engineering
tools.

Genetic modifications are carried out in plant and
animal species that are used for human consumption.

It is important to note that the technique is mostly
applied on cash crops such as cotton due to their high
demand in the market.

History of Genetic
Modification

For more than 10,000 years, farmers have used the
technique of causing transition in the DnA
composition of organisms to promote their harvest.

In the older times, people used selective cross
breeding for the purpose of creating a sense of
diversity in animal and plant species.
