Introduction and Thesis Statement
Cleopatra who ruled Egypt around 1478 and 1458 BC and Empress Wu Zetian who ruled
China around 690-705 AD were bold and powerful women. Cleopatra and Empress Wu are
selected for this paper because they were strong, powerful, and intellectual to seize control of the
Imperial Throne. The comparison of Cleopatra and Empress Wu offers a clear indication that
women of the ancient time were tactical and brutal in a way. It is undeniable that Empress Wu is
worth comparing with Cleopatra because they had nearly similar leadership traits, but was
different in some ways.
Similarities between Cleopatra and Empress Wu Zetian
Both Empress Wu and Cleopatra oversaw many wars. Empress Wu oversaw the
complete conquest of Korea, while Cleopatra oversaw the conquest of Ancient Persian Empire.
Under Empress Wu, China expanded to the west, South, and North. She did not lose all the
territories she had acquired. Empress Wu and Cleopatra had strong military power and support
that helped them to sustain their leadership in the throne (Bradford, 2016). Just like Cleopatra,
Empress Wu had a great military prowess, killing and annihilating those who stood on their way
and rule China with an iron fist for nearly over a half a century.
They were both brutal and ruthless in the way they rule. Before Cleopatra took over the
throne, she had killed her own mother and sister who were an impediment to her future
leadership. Their political decisions were wise. Cleopatra went into war with Ptolemy XIII by
using unique military tactics such as an ambush (Peterson, 2016). Just like Empress Wu,
Cleopatra acquired new territories through conquests and military alliances. Cleopatra mostly
successful alliance was the one she entered with her husband Mark Anthony. It was successful in
