WEEK 9
INITIAL POST

Hospital Quality Index measures are an important aspect of our focus at Mayo Clinic
Health System. One of those measures that we focus on highly is the CAUTI rates. CAUTI
stands for Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections (Healthcare-associated Infections, 2017).
In 2018, we saw a rise in our CAUTI numbers and knew we had to make a change. Last week
We discussed a new product that replaces the urinary catheter, and it is called the Purewick
(Purewick, n.d.). This is an external device that sits in the genital region and is connected to
suction to keep the urine off of the patient (Purewick, n.d.)
Leadership Types for Staff Involved in CAUTI Project
The implementation of the new alternate catheter product stemmed from the Hospital
Wide Quality Council where we assess CAUTI monthly. The individuals I worked with on this
project have similar leadership styles, but also have some differences. A Democratic Leadership
style is one of which leaders encourage participation from frontline staff in decision making
(Marquis & Houston, 2017). A transformational leadership style is where leaders encourage
staff to keep positive attitudes rather than negative (Marquis & Houston, 2017). The group
members as well as myself all fall mostly into these two leadership styles and worked very well
together in the implementation of this product. Transformational leadership had been linked to
staff satisfaction, and job retention, therefore, this is an important type of leadership to encourage
and continue within our organization (Casida, Jesus, & Jessica Parker, 2011). The leadership
skills of my peers for this product rollout are very similar to my own which is a huge reason it
was not hard to work together as a team.
New Product Idea/Implementation
My idea for a new product implementation would be to contact the BARD company and
now begin researching male options to use rather than a foley. BARD makes a condom catheter
for male patients but we currently do not use it yet (Purewick, n.d.). Implementing the male
alternative to the Foley catheter would be beneficial to the organization in our attempts to reduce
CAUTI rates. Currently, we do not use condom catheters often due to lack of adhesive with the
old products.
