Prompt

Using the question that you posed in Project 2 (I will attach it) explain why the answer is important for understanding yourself, other people, and the world around you. In addition, you will discuss how the natural sciences have developed to help us answer these important questions. Your presentation should include speaker notes so that your instructor knows what you would be saying if you were actually giving the presentation. The critical elements of this project will be evaluated by the information in your presentation. Be sure your actual question is apparent in the presentation.

Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:

I. Why is the question you identified important to you as a member of society?

II. Explain how finding the answer to your question might impact others around you. For example, who might be most interested in the answer to your question?

III. Explain why studying the natural sciences is valuable. In other words, what is the benefit of studying topics in the natural sciences?

IV. Describe the major developments in the natural sciences related to your topic. Use course resources to back up your discussion.

V. Detail the major developments in scientific thinking that support the study and advancement of the natural sciences as necessary and valuable. Use course resources to back up your discussion.

VI. How do these developments in the natural sciences and scientific thinking inform questions about the topic in your news story? In other words, what is the relationship between major developments in the natural sciences and the questions that natural scientists are interested in?

VII. Discuss the obligation that you have as a citizen of your society to understand the science behind issues that impact you every day. For instance, how can being a more scientifically informed member of society benefit you and your community?

Please be sure to answer ALL CRITICAL ELEMENT QUESTIONS.

1. Why did you select your news story? What about the story makes it interesting to you both personally and scientifically? I chose this news story because I’ve always been interested in biology, something about the human body is intriguing to me. Every person is different but yet we share so many similarities that make up our basic map of the mind and body. Another thing I found interesting about this article was that it focused on marriage. Marriage in my generation is like taboo now, and you don’t see many people that come from long term married households, so I found the concept of how these older couples who have been married for decades change over time. Humor is one of those things I feel you either have it naturally or you acquire it through personal experiences and this news article was a great example of how it is acquired over time through experience. 2. What did you already know about the topic before selecting the news story? What opinions or assumptions had you made about it? I knew this topic was going to primarily focus on couples that are in their 60’s or older and that the length of time had to be more than ten years. I assumed it was going to go deeper I to the psychological aspect of how these changes occur within the couples and breakdown the different psychology theories that support the research conducted. 3. Which concepts covered in the course relate to your news story? How? Unfortunately, my news story wasn’t heavily composed of concepts I’ve learned throughout the course, there were very few topics throughout the lessons that highlighted human behavior through psychology. I was however able to use the knowledge I already had about the branch of biology and apply things such as objective information when furthering my research for my projects about my news story. 4. What question do you have about the topic in the news story? Select one question that interests you based on your topic exploration graphic organizer and previous responses. One question that I have about the topic in my news story is why older couples and videotaped evidence instead of audio taped alone. 5. Why would this question be important to a natural scientist? This question would be important to a natural scientist because this a profession that is concerned with the understanding, prediction, and description of natural phenomena, therefore using evidence that restricts the visual aspect from observation and experimentation would interest them in finding other ways to support their study of human behaviors. Topic (Describe the topic discussed in your news story, providing details about the background of the topic.) The topic of this news story is how time with your significant other alters the way in which you both deal with situations that were troublesome before. Using humor as a mechanism to explain and better understand the minuscule arguing and bickering that seems to occur within relationships with couples earlier on. Evidence is collected from older couples with more history and older ages, I assume to really grasp the effects of time and human behavior. Main Idea (Identify the main idea or thesis in the news story you selected.) The main topic of this article is to inform readers about the changes that accompany age in married couples. Highlighting some of the issues that trouble couples early on such as fighting, nagging, and bickering with one another and how those things seems to become nonexistent with age as the humor tends to take over and alters how married couples handles certain situations before. Supporting Evidence (Describe the evidence that supports the main idea or thesis of your news story.) 1) Videotaped conversations analyzed by researchers from 87 middle aged couples married for 15-35 years. 2) The results are the latest to emerge from a 25-year UC Berkeley study headed by Levenson of more than 150 long-term marriages 3) The findings which were published in the journal “Emotion,” showed an increase in positive behaviors as humor and affection and a decrease in negative behaviors such as defensiveness and criticism Questions (Your questions should be based on the main idea and supporting evidence that you identified.) 1) Would the results be different if the ages of the couples were younger and researchers used only audio evidence instead of video as well? 2) What if the 25 year UC Berkeley study wasn’t conducted, how would the present group have gathered their information or what would they have used as a model? 3) Why is it humor that replaces the negative behaviors? Information (Identify the types of sources that you could use to find more information about the topic discussed in your news story and the questions you posed.) Personal anecdotes from older couples that have been married for long period of time could be used as a source, as well as similar case studies but with couples who married you but are still in long term marriage.
