One of the things I learned from the AP investigation was that slaves still existed
particularly in Benjina, and lived in fear of death; they were oppressed by working long hours
with little pay or no pay at all. When asked, the slaves said they had no idea where the fish was
taken too but said that they only knew it was valuable since they weren’t allowed to eat it. There
working conditions were so bad that some would give up by throwing themselves into the water,
