Fencing:   2x+y = 3480   hence we can write ,  y = 3480-2x

Area of land, A = xy   or we can write A = x(3480-2x)  ; A = 3480x-2x²

To find the maximum possible area, let us find its first derivative
A' = 3480-4x  = 0
  solving we get ,  4x = 3480    ;  or  x  = 870 yards
y = 3480- 2x = 1740 yards

Maximum possible  Area = 840×1740 = 1,461,600 squar yards

the x and the area are wrong

Jul 17th, 2015

Maximum possible  Area = 870×1740 = 1513800 square yards

x = 870 yd

y = 1740 yd

area = 1513800 yd ^2
