Exercise 3.1: preparing an organization against terrorist attacks
There can be various ways in which biological or chemical terrorism can take place. Such attacks
may range from anthrax spores, toxic gas attacks, or even low-level radiological attacks. Despite
knowing that there are chances of such attack happening, it is not possible to determine when
such an attack may occur.
Anthrax or biological attacks like smallpox attacks
Unlike other forms of terrorist attacks, a biological attack may or may not be felt immediately
although it can be possible to see the signs right away. If it takes place in an organization,
workers can experience specific patterns of uncommon illness thus calling for emergency
medical attention. Anthrax is one way in which biological attacks can be conducted especially
after inhaling anthrax spores. Workers need to understand that symptoms may appear within
seven days or even forty days in case it is inhaled. Preventing biological attacks like anthrax and
smallpox involves the use of vaccine and other supportive medical care to control the symptoms.
Sarin or another toxic gas attacks
The toxic gas attack may be caused by a toxic gas itself, solid, or a liquid which can release
poison to people or the environment. Possible symptoms of such an attack may include losing
coordination, trouble when breathing, chocking, twitching, and even having watery eyes. In case
such attack takes place, it is necessary to report it immediately so that the necessary antidotes can
be provided. Doing so is also vital because toxic substances like chlorine do not have any
medication and the best treatment is removing it from the body before any damage is done.
