Two types of statistical data can be used to illustrate changes in encounters with death in American society: death rates and average life expectancy. How have these sets of data changed over the last hundred years in the United States? People in American society a hundred years ago often died of communicable diseases; today they often die of degenerative diseases. How do we distinguish these two types of death, and what are the patterns of dying that are associated with them typically like?
