In an attempt to eliminate implicit bias in policing, is bias training enough to prevent
discrimination against minorities?
Short Answer
Implicit bias can exist even with the absence of heartfelt bigotry due to internalized messages
from the media and societal attitudes towards certain races, ethnicities, and nationalities. Implicit
bias in the police force can have devastating consequences such as the killing of innocent
civilians. Even though bias training can help manage implicit bias in the short term, it lacks
objectivity and assurances since implicit associations are not easily unlearned. The police should,
therefore, have a script or protocol to follow to ensure that they do not act on their biases.
