I believe that too much IM interferes with a person's "flow" while working. If you're a manager and constantly receiving instant messaging from employees who need answers to questions, instead of by regular email, you feel as if you are under constant pressure to answer those questions immediately instead of when it's convenient. Some IMs are necessary, but it could seriously hinder productivity if employees constantly are answering questions. Multiple questions/suggestions should not be in IM. They should be in memo or email format so the person can get back to the other employee at his/her convenience.
