Welcome to Week 5. This week, you will be learning about instructional design and creating your own 3 day math unit! If this seems overwhelming, try not to worry too much. You will be using a 3 Day Unit Plan template, which will help ensure you do not forget any important components. You can find the 3-Day Unit template in the College of Education site in the Student Success Center. As you design your unit, you are going to be pulling together everything you’ve learned so far about aligning standards, formative and summative assessments, differentiation, developmentally appropriate resources/materials, and academic vocabulary.Our objectives this week are:Design developmentally appropriate unit plans for teaching mathematics that are standards-based and include appropriate sequencing of learning experiences.Plan assessments that are aligned to content standards and are designed to address individual student needs, and to support, verify, and document student learning.Your study materials for the week will also help provide some background knowledge for yourself on mathematics instructional design. Also, even though you do not have any textbooks readings included in your study materials, it is a fantastic resource if you need more information about differentiation and assessment. Specific chapters which you might find helpful are: Chapter 4 (Differentiating Instruction), Chapter 5 (Teaching Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students) and Chapter 6 (Teaching and Assessing Students with Exceptionalities). Also, as you’re thinking about designing lessons, keep in mind that your textbook has a multitude of activities sprinkled throughout Chapters 8-11 that focus on building number sense, developing basic fact fluency, building whole number place value concepts and strategies for whole number computation.In addition, I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you take the time to watch the GCU COE Lesson Plan template help as it offers very detailed information on multiple means of representation, multiple means of engagement and multiple means of expression.
