In a certain γ decay process, an excited neon atom emits a γ-ray that has an energy of 1.630 MeV. The neon atom in the ground state has a mass of 19.992 435 u. What is the mass of the excited neon atom?

E = 1.630MeV*1.60x10^-13/1MeV = 2.608x10^-13J

Using E = mc^2 we have m = E/c^2 = 2.608x10^-13/(3.00x10^8)^2 = 2.89777x10^-30kg

This is 2.897777x10^-30/1.67x10^-27 = 0.0017352 u

So m of the excited neon = 19.992435 + 0.0017352 = 19.994185 u
