Adding the two equations, we get

x   - 4y = 18 

-x + 2y = -8 

      -2y = 10

         y = 10/(-2)

         y = -5


Substitute value of y in the first  equation

x - 4*(-5) = 18

x + 20 = 18

x = 18 - 20

x = -2


So, solution is x = -2 , y = -5 .
