Introduction
Democracy was well advocated by Meletus in Athens during the era where the thirty
tyrants have taken total control of the government and caused the suffering of masses through
poor governance and outright vandalism of state resources. Indeed, Meletus is instrumental in
advocating for the rights of the masses in the state and has proposed various public policies that
will help avert the situation and spur the country back to democracy. Among the proposals is to
pass legislation that will see Polis pay for people who participate in political affairs, attending
national assembly meetings to survive the economic crisis and also act as an incentive to the
public to be active politically and aggravate for political change towards a more democratic
Polis. In this article, I argue against Meletus advocacy for payment of citizens and that it would
further plunge Athens into further political oblivion.
My Argument
The thirty tyrants have violated democratic values in Polis by flagrantly denying payment
to the public workers due to the tragic state of the economy after years of war and plunder by the
elite few (Ober, Norman, Carnes and Carnes, 2015). The effect has been a weak economy due to
failed fiscal policies by the ruling class. Most citizens remained poor and in financial debt, and
Polis is not in a position to implement market stimulation policies to spur economic growth due
to poor political decisions.
