Part 1: Log into your ArcGIS Online account • • • • Use the ArcGIS Online link in the Blackboard menu (left side of the screen). To log into your account: o Username: please see this in the Blackboard gradebook under the item “ArcGIS Username” o Password: spring2019 (you can change this later if you’d like) Once signed in, click on “Map” at the top of the screen For this assignment you’ll be adding two different layers to a map to see where the layers coincide: o Click on the “Add” dropdown menu and select “Browse Living Atlas Layers” o In the search box, type “biodiversity hotspots” and then hit “Enter” on your keyboard o In the results, select the “CEPF terrestrial biodiversity hotspots 2016” by clicking on the “+” symbol. o If needed, zoom out so you can see the entire world o Click on the “Add” dropdown menu again and select “Browse Living Atlas Layers” o In the search box, type “percent habitat loss” and then hit “Enter” on your keyboard o In the results, select the “Percent habitat loss (2009)” by clicking on the “+” symbol. o Click on the “Details” button in the upper left, and then click on “Legend” to see what the different colors indicate for the two different layers. o Click on the “Content” button to turn on and off the layers by checking on and off the boxes next to the layer name. Part 2: Screenshots and mapping questions 1. Turn off the habitat loss layer so that only the biodiversity hotspots are showing on the map. Focusing on the North and South American continents, briefly describe the locations of the biodiversity hotspots for these two continents. 2. Now turn off the biodiversity hotspot layer and turn on only the habitat loss layer. Focusing again on the North and South American continents, which general biodiversity hotspots are experiencing habitat loss? 3. Where are the biodiversity hotspots in Massachusetts? What percent of habitat loss have they experienced? Part 3: Reflection Please response to the following in a few sentences. 1. Briefly describe how the two layers were created. To find this information, click on the “Content” button and then hover over the name of a layer. You’ll see a “…” icon. Click on the “…” icon and select “Show Item Details” from the dropdown options. This will open a new browser window with information about the data layer. a. Briefly describe how the Percent Habitat Loss layer was created b. Briefly describe how the Biodiversity Hotspot layer was created. 2. Now that you know how the data were created, briefly comment on the strengths and weaknesses of using these layers for understanding biodiversity richness and loss.
