Running Head: AFFIRMATIVE ACTION
According to National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), affirmative action
policies are those activities in which an organization or institution participates in efforts to
provide opportunities for groups which have been excluded historically in the American society.
These policies often focus on education and employment. They provide equal access to
employment and education for groups that have been underrepresented or excluded historically
such as the women and the minorities (http://www.ncsl.org/). This paper will investigate Lane
Community College in the United States to identify the manner in which the organisation has
adhered to affirmative action policies.
Civil Rights Movement of 1960 brought about affirmative action which was intended to
offer equal opportunities to women and members of minority groups in the employment and
education sector. Affirmative action policies direct government contractors to take positive
actions to ensure that applicants are employed and treated fairly without regard to their color,
creed, race or national origin. However, the issue of affirmative action has become a hotly
debated topic in the country. Some people believe that these policies are essential for
compensating those who underwent centuries of economic, racial and social oppression.
