Introduction
Banning smoking in public is one of the many debates in the United States where it is
increasingly becoming evident that a consensus will not be found. Owing to the harmful effects
associated with secondhand smoking, there have been efforts which are aimed at developing
smoking policies which are aimed at banning smoking in public. While there are people who
support the idea of banning smoking in public, there are others who feel that banning it would be
inappropriate. Among the people who support the banning of smoking in public, their primary
argument is that smoke does not remain where the smoking has taken place. Instead, the smoke
disperses to other places, and that may have adverse effects on non-smokers. However, the
persons who support smoking in public indicate that among other reasons, the designated
smoking areas should protect non-smokers. Looking at the arguments in support and against
banning of smoking in public, it emerges that the secondhand smoke from the smokers usually
gets to the innocent and unintentional smokers, in the process causing adverse and potentially
life-threatening health complications, making it necessary to ban smoking in public.
Arguments against banning smoking
Public places have set aside designated smoking zones so that only smokers visit such
areas. In many parts of the country, authorities have set aside designated smoking areas to make
sure that those who do not smoke are not affected by the smoke. In this argument, the article
assumes that the smoke from the smoking areas does not escape to other regions. Another
assumption that the article makes is that non-smokers will stay away from such regions. While
