Comparison of Esparanza and Other Women
The House on Mango Street is a novel by Sandra Cisneros which was written back in the
year 1984. The novel is all about a Mexican-American girl who is12 years old especially when
the novel begins. It is during the time that the girl moves to thee house together with her family.
The move is an indication of an improvement. However, it is contrary to the dreams and the
expectations of Esperanza (Cisneros 4). The sexual experiences in the neighbor-hood play a
major role in influencing the character of the Esperanza and the urge to move out of the house in
the Mango Street. Therefore, in this context, the discussion below is an analysis of the
Esperanza’s character as a woman and how her character compares to other women in the novel.
In the novel, there is a series of awakenings. In the beginning, the Esperanza’s character
comes out as childish and ignorant about sexual relations. It explains why Esperanza finds it
challenging to even relate with the brothers. However, upon getting the stage of adolescence, she
realizes the power she holds as a woman (Cisneros 8). She has the perception that she can easily
