Description

* Research and find an artist or group that is combining an international music with jazz to create a new Jazz sound. Limit your research to music from the 21stCentury (since the year 2000.) Pick a culture or country whose music you would be interested in learning about and see if you can find an artist or group who is combining that music with Jazz music to create a new Jazz sound. BE SURE YOU FIND AN ARTIST OR GROUP THAT IS COMBINING AN INTERNATIONAL MUSIC AND JAZZ, TO CREATE A NEW JAZZ SOUND. There are a number of examples of non-jazz artists using international music in their folk music, rock music, hip hop etc.., so be sure your choice of artist/group is a JAZZ artist. The artist can be an American that is using International music as an influence or it can be an artist who is from another country that is an accomplished Jazz artist who is exploring combining music from his/her culture with Jazz. Be SURE the artist is a Jazz artist and the music you write about is a combination of Jazz and an International music style.

Example: an online search for “Traditional Japanese music and Jazz” produced a large number of entries, and some were useful in suggesting some artists that are combining the 2 styles of music to create a new Jazz based music.

*Requirements:

  1. Write a 1000-1500 word paper which describes the artist/group and their music. The paper should be well written, following general rules and formatting for a Research Paper (see suggested format below). Citations should be in MLA or APA format.
  2. Use your research to write a description of the artist/groups concepts and ideas for combining the international music with Jazz. It is important that find descriptions of the concepts and ideas from the artist and/or reputable experts reviewing the project. You need to do significant research to be able to write about the ways the artist or group is combining the international music elements with Jazz elements to create the new music.
  3. Include your own description of what you hear in the music. Describe the ways the music moves you.
  4. Include a description of the artist/groups, what they are known for and other relevant projects/recordings they have produced. Include a selected discography.
  5. Include information about the recordings you write about:
    1. Date released
    2. Record label
    3. Musicians on the recording
    4. How readers can find this music (purchase, listen, etc)
*Basic format:Opening Paragraph (Thesis) – describes the content of the paper and the points to be made.Inside Paragraphs – discuss each topic presented in the Opening Paragraph (Thesis)ConclusionDiscography – a selective listing of the Artist/Group’s important recordings that relate to the paper. Look up “discography” so you know what it is!Research References – citations need to be in MLA or APA format

A Focus on Henry Threadgill
As time evolves, there has been a need among jazz musicians to blend different genres as
a way of coping with a diverse audience. It has been remarked that a jazz artist in the 21st
century is “likely to pull from the avant-garde, post-bop, 3rd stream and modern fusion all within
the same piece” (Hill, 4). Ironically, as the different genres continue to be applied, there has been
an overarching similarity of jazz in the 21st century, more than there has been observed in
previous decades. The idea is that the jazz of modern times is a reflection of artists who do not
conform to any of the identified genres of jazz, but some elements are outside the traditional
jazz. Henry Threadgill is a jazz artist who reflects this aspect, an ability to transcend a
disposition towards any rigidity that does not warrant the needs of the 21st century. It implies
that the artist has been able to weave through different genres into jazz, and this could explain
why he remains the third jazz artist to have received the Pulitzer Prize, after Ornette Coleman
and Wynton Marsalis. His music is an unconventional timbre with a sly maestro, and this has
seen him regarded one who veers towards contemporary classical music, though he does not
settle under such an inclination.
Some traits have been associated with such composure. First, the many artists who have
used international music have used different compositions and arrangements in their pieces. The
idea of improvisation, which is at the heart of this blend, mainly depends on how the chords

succeed one another. In some instances, some sections are set as free pieces, devoid of a need to
have such an arrangement. Therefore, when it comes to the use of international music into jazz
music, large pieces with multiple sections are common in such compositions. Perhaps, this can
be explained by the observation that “there is an attempt in modern jazz to blend composition
and improvisation in ways that make them hard to tell apart” (Chinen, 3) which could try and
offer insight on why it has become challenging to decipher any differences in these pieces. There
is also increased use of large ensembles, usually between 5-8 pieces, and this leads to the use of
‘mini big bands’ when it comes to the jazz, and there are different instruments used, such as
violins, cello, and clarinets which had disappeared from jazz music for some time. When it
comes to the use of rhythms, jazz has become a combination of different rhymes. For instance, it
has become common for jazz to become unpredictable, with some people swinging, international
fusion, but there have been some freestyles too. It ...
