John Smith was the leader of the Virginia Colony (based at Jamestown) between September 1608 and August 1609, and he led an exploration along the rivers of Virginia and the Chesapeake Bay; he also gave the name New England to that region. He encouraged the people to farm/grow their own food and the settlement did very well while he was in charge.
