One of the most fundamental aspects of a nurse’s role in the health care industry is leadership
and management. Nurses are crucial in the provision of quality care in the health care sector. It is thus
imperative to maintain a proper staffing ratio to ensure nurses can deliver and maintain superior services
to their patients. One of the challenges that have led to increased reported cases of patient’s death, longer
hospital stay, medical errors, among other complications has been linked to the increased workload to
the nurses (Heath, 2018). Such challenges have complicated the responsibility of nursing leaders and
managers within the various healthcare institutions and organizations. In this paper, we would analyze
the nurse staffing ratio, approaches of addressing this challenge from the leadership and management
styles and the author’s personal philosophy in regards to the role of a leader and manager.
Hospital patient-to-nurse staffing ratios are associated with quality outcomes. There has been an
increasing concern for healthcare organizations to maintain the recommended ratio of nurse-to-patient
as this will improve patient care quality because nurses will devote their attention to fewer patients.
However, if a healthcare facility can only dedicate one nurse to a limited number of patients, it will hinder
