Identification the business problems
State Fighters association is a relatively large non-profit organization whose financial and
member management is facing challenges due to the outdated system in place. The extant system
is powered by an outdated operating system which supports the earliest versions of the database
management applications (dBase3). Typically, dBase3 is an outdated database management
platform which operates through a database engine, a query system, forms engine and a
programming language that ties the components named above together (Duffy, 1990).
Consequently, no available software package in the contemporary setting runs on dBase3 due to
advancement in Database Management Systems (DBMS). Since the system is outdated in
general, it is clear that there are no experts who can manage the current system including the
presumably outdated software package being used by Bob and his wife. The case indicates that
querying is a difficult task for the system to accomplish and in some cases, it takes 17 hours to
finish running one query!
On the other hand, interacting with the current system is a painful process since the
system’s interface operates on a DOS operating system which does not have the modern
graphical user interface. Typically, a user has to type in commands to manipulate data entry as
well as management activities. For this reason, the software package in use is said to be
inconvenient since one field is displayed at a time during data entry. Therefore, it is very difficult
to return to the preceding fields to make corrections. Even worse, the database is unstable
presumably because it was not created to handle a large data set. Theref...
