3. If attended your opinion/ perspective before and after the meeting.

AL-ANON-EFFECTIVE SUPPORT FOR FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF ALCOHOLICS
Primary Purpose of Al-Anon
Although many people in the society affected by alcoholism turn to Al-Anon for
assistance in stopping drinking by a loved one, the organization tries to offer understanding and
emotional support to friends and families of alcoholics. It recognizes the trauma that such people
face, more so if they are children and adolescents that may not necessarily possess the required
emotional capabilities and maturity to handle an alcoholic. It recognizes the fact that people
surrounding alcoholics have lasting emotional scars that may remain long after sobriety of their
loved ones. As such, they need a special form of counseling and treatment ("Help and Hope for
Families and Friends of Alcoholics", 2019).
Brief History of Al-Anon
The fellowship was founded in 1951, around sixteen years after Alcoholics
Anonymous was formed. Lois W. founded the fellowship and Anne B. Lois’ husband, Bill, was a
recovering alcoholic ("Al-Anon History | Al-Anon Family Groups", 2019). He saw the trauma
his addiction caused, more so to his wife and suggested the various independent groups of
families of alcoholics that frequently met be consolidated into one organization, under the
supervisions of his wife. The group incorporated the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous.
They adopted the steps, word for word, the only exception being the twelfth step.
Perspectives of the Meetings
The meetings help members to address problems that develop from alcoholism.
