Article summary
Nguyen, T. V., Center, J. R., & Eisman, J. A. (2000). Osteoporosis in elderly men and women:
effects of dietary calcium, physical activity, and body mass index. Journal of bone and
mineral research, 15(2), 322-331.
Nguyen, T. V., Center, J. R., & Eisman, J. A. (2000) assert in the article about
osteoporosis in elder men and women, discusses on the effects of physical activities, dietary
calcium and the index of body mass. Osteoporosis occurs in the body as a result of bones lacking
the required strength. The condition can lead to the body developing minor or major bumps
which have lower chances of reforming back to normal. However, osteoporosis is common to
older people especially between the age of 65 years and above. Older people who consume less
or no calcium at all are the ones who develop the condition mostly.
The article recommends a higher intake of calcium and being involved in often physical
exercises. A study involving 690 men and 1075 women who are aged 65 years and above was
performed in order to determine the association of bone mineral density (BMD) and the total
body mass index (BMI). Calcium intake in their bodies was inversely proportional to their age
while physical exercise was directly proposition (de Zepetnek, J. O. T., Giangregorio, L. M., &
Craven, B. C. 2009). This showed that the old people involved in physical exercise more than the
rate of calcium intake in their bodies.
Recently, research has proved that physicians can use body mineral density to determine
whether a person is at the risk of getting osteoporosis or not. Thus, body mineral density can be
regulated by body nutrition, surrounding factors, physical exercises and the number of gonadal
hormones in the body. The article shows that according to research, a large amount of calcium is

consumed by the skeleton thus making it difficult to determine the relationship between body
mass index and calcium intake in the body.
According to the article, recent research gives epidemiological evidence that frequent
physical exercise can prevent the body from osteoporosis thus giving the physicians ample time
to check osteoporosis progression in the body. Additionally, bone loss can be as a result of body
immobilization and weight loss. The article indicates that men are the most affected by the
condition than women. Reason being, women are involved in multiple household chores which is
a part of the physical exercise which reduces their chances of getting the disease.
Research carried out in New South Wales in Australia invited several older men and
women in the study of osteoporosis. The main subject was to state the amount of calcium that
they consume through the foods and fruits they consume each day. Researchers use milk which
has a higher content of calcium to figure out the amount of calcium t...
