Case 1: New Policies for Telephone Messages
This example represents the minimum requirement and the privacy rule under the HIPPA.
The privacy rule dictates how a covered institution must ensure the confidentiality of the protected
health information (PHI). Ideally, communicating to the consumers is an essential concept that
should be put into great consideration. The privacy rules allow consumers to control the use of
their health information and that includes obtaining feedback from health care providers (Grama,
2010). The hospital employee failed to adhere to the privacy rule when she left a telephone
message despite the patient’s instructions to contact her through the workplace numbers. The
hospital sought to support of the minimum necessary and the privacy laws by training the
employees on the required minimum essential information in a message. In addition, the
employees were trained to review the registration information before contacting the consumer.
