Introduction
According to the controlled substances Act of 1970, the use and possession of cannabis
have been illegal under Federal law in the past few decades. However, in the current world, this
is not the case for most states due to the legal and medical benefits associated with marijuana. In
the past, most people believed that the substance had a high potential of abuse causing harm to
human beings. Although there are no proven research findings that Marijuana has resulted in the
death of its users or any emotional, mental or biological harm to its consumers.
As part of its mandate, the National Institute of Drug Abuse has conducted several kinds
of researches concerning marijuana. Their main purpose is to provide advice to both the public
and other policy-makers about cannabis. The scientific research findings by NIDA are used by
policy-makers to decide whether to legalize marijuana or not. According to the National Institute
of Drug Abuse, there are no scientific findings to tie the use of cannabis with mental illness
among its users. Additionally, there is insufficient evidence in research to indicate that marijuana
causes death due to an overdose of the substance. This is because cannabis does not have any
toxins compared to other drugs including heroin and cocaine. The National Institute of Drug
Abuse has presented several proposals concerning the therapeutic benefits of marijuana
(Campbell, Twenge and Carter, 2017). The debate as to whether the substance has any medicinal
benefits has been ongoing for decades. Although the United States Food and Drug
Administration has approved that cannabis can be prescribed to patients with cancer or HIV due
to its positive impact. The National Institute of Health ensures that the medicines derived from
marijuana are evaluated appropriately to confirm its safety and effectiveness in treatment. Most
of the research by the U.S Food and Drug Administration as given results showing that cannabis
contains some chemicals which can be used to treat a range of illnesses and symptoms.
