AUTISM AND ASPERGER’S SYNDROME

AUTISM AND ASPERGER’S SYNDROME
In 1943, Leo Kanner tried to describe autism after studying eleven children who were suffering
from this disorder. After his study, he realized that autistic children relate more to objects as
compared to people. At the age of three, every mother is eager to see his or her child begin to
speak. If this never happens, they become concerned as the children start developing different
symptoms. Autism is more common in boys than in girls. The condition affects everybody
regardless of race, lifestyle or educational level.
Asperger’s syndrome has been described as Autism Spectrum disorder. According to the
community psychology, it is advisable to care for these people just as the ordinary people get
treated. It has been difficult for the society to play its role in the protection of the people with
Asperger’s Syndrome due to the social issues which have risen following this condition (Goldstein,
S., & Ozonoff, S. 2018). The lives of the people with both Asperger’s syndrome and Autism seem
to be difficult as they find it troublesome to interact and build a relationship with other groups in
the society.
Community psychology has done much to help the society accept these individuals the way they
are and be considered as members of the community. A lot of support is needed in the society for
such people to find the community a suitable environment to live. Proper care will help them accept
medications which are provided by the psychologists in the city. They must ensure the safety of
these patients in society. There is a little difference between autism and Asperger’s syndrome. The
current tests carried out show that Asperger’s syndrome is lesser severe as compared to autism
disorder.

AUTISM AND ASPERGER’S SYNDROME

3

Asperger’s syndrome is a condition which is related to the autism disorder. It has, therefore, been
defined as a high functioning type of the autism spectrum disorder and has been used to diagnose
the autism condition in individuals. The disease is not as severe as autism disorder, and that is why
it has been used to diagnose the autism condition. Asperger’s syndrome is characterized by
syndromes which are more related to those of autism though these are less severe.
Symptoms of Asperger’s Syndrome
Asperger’s syndrome results in different symptoms in infants, teenagers, and adults. Parents might
begin to recognize these signs in their children at the age of three.
Symptoms in children
At the age of three, children must have learned to speak, respond to situations including nonverbal
cues such as body gestures. The signs seen in children affected by this disorder include the inability
to respond and react to social situations. The children seem not to be in the position to respond to
gestures. These children also suffer the failure to solve problems on their own. It is because of the
difficulty to respond to these problems. Asperger’s children also find it troublesome to maintain
relationships.
Symptoms in teenagers
Teens suffering from Asperger’s condition also develop symptoms which are more or less like
those of the children. The teens find it difficult to regulate their emotions. The disease leads to the
difficulty in controlling their emotions thus they can be sentimental at times which can take quite
a long time. Some of the teens who suffer from Asperger’s syndrome express a lot of
aggressiveness and could harm others. They also tend to isolate themselves from others and only
try to do things on their own. The teenagers also acquire repetitive behavior in that when they

begin to do a single task, they become obsessed with the work and can practice it for quite a long
time. Other symptoms include disorganization whereby they cannot maintain order in whatever
they do. They also lack eye contact and cannot look into others’ eyes.
Symptoms in adults
They cannot respond to situations, therefore, maintaining a healthy relationship or friendship
becomes an issue. Individuals with Asperger’s syndrome find it difficult to maintain eye contact
with everyone; actually, they tend to stare at a specific location for quite a long time. They find it
difficult to look at individual or respond to an individual. Another symptom of this disorder is that
the individual lacks social skills. Doctors diagnose a patient who suffers from Asperger’s
syndrome by determining their social skills. In any social situations, they find it difficult to respond
to talks from other people. They also tend to lack what to say but keep staring. The adult individuals
find it difficult to respond to humor or sarcasm. They live in a world where everything seems
reasonable, and nothing could go wrong.
Autism
Autism is a neurological disorder which affects children and develops to adulthood. It could also
be defined as a neurobehavioral condition which affects humans. Autism is associated with several
impairments which are very severe as compared to that of Asperger’s syndrome. Autism may
sometimes lead disabilities which may require special attention and healthcare to help the
individual who suffers from this disorder. The symptoms of autistic individuals include the
following;
Autistic children find it difficult to communicate. They cannot understand what people feel and
think. Being that they cannot determine what people believe and remember, they find it difficult
