Poetry
Introduction
Poetry is derived from a Greek word called poesies. They are short statements written in
lines and pass messages. A poet becomes creative and makes it unique through using different
styles and language. This makes the poem different from narratives.

They are usually short

than narratives and hence achieve passing the message. Poetry uses different language patterns
and also it has some features that make it unique.

To achieve it, poets use assonance,

consonance, alliteration, rhyme, and rhythm to make it sound musical.

This acts as a form of

entertainment and also as a way of sharpening the reader’s wits. It may also have some language
patterns such as similes, oxymoron’s, metaphors and other styles like personifications.

This

form of art is different since they are usually written in lines. A poem has stanzas instead of
paragraphs (LaBlanc, 2000). This paper focuses on the different styles used in different poems
like figurative languages such as imagery, metaphors, sonnets, symbolism, and consonance.
Imagery
These are languages that are used in a poem and bring music in it. They are languages
that when thought widely by a reader, they give deeper meaning and thus said that the poem has
a wider meaning for instance, in That time of the year by William Shakespeare in the firsts
quatrain, he compares himself to the autumn season. In this, we see how a poet compares some
of the human traits to nature. He deduces that at that time of the year he is like a tree that has
begun to lose its leaves and the cold is setting in. This is a metaphor and was chosen for its
imagery of bareness. According to Shakespeare, it signifies that once upon there was the growth
of hair to his head and currently it alludes to his baldness. A metaphor is widely spread in the

Shakespeare poem and we see it in the second quatrain where he talks of short life going from
seasons of the year to hours of the day and finally, it ends. This foreshadows that in life or any
creature that is living will one day die.
Sonnets
Sonnets are types of poems that talk about love. For instance in the poem by Hayden
Those Winter Sundays, his style is simple and straight forward. Its simplicity can be seen when
he directly matches the cold, silent wintry morning in the lines. This poem is unique since he
does not have a pattern in the rhyme or rhythm.

His poem contains fourteen lines and this

makes it be categorized as a sonnet. This poem is about Hydens love to his father. The poem is
split into three stanzas. Sonnets may lack an end rhyme and consistent of rhythm. Some lines in
a sonnet may iambic and others a mix of iambic and anapestic which means that there is no
guiding of beats and is done intentionally.
Tone and voice are also found in sonnets.

For instance, in Hyden's poem, we have a

reflective tone of voice. This voice brings sense and tries to show the reader the reflective
actions that are there. The voice comes and we see the feelings of the phrasing being described
in the poem.

This makes us understand the attitude and the en...

Tutor went the extra mile to help me with this essay. Citations were a bit shaky but I appreciated how well he handled APA styles and how ok he was to change them even though I didnt specify. Got a B+ which is believable and acceptable.
