THE ROLE OF JUBAL EARLY IN THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR
Jubal Anderson Early was born on 3rd November 1816, in Virginia, Franklin County. He
was appointed to the west point US military academy in 1833. Upon graduation in 1837, he
joined the third artillery of the United States but resigned in 1838. After resigning his
commission early took up the law in Virginia, where he made his name as a prominent
prosecutor and was recognized by being elected to the House of Delegates in Virginia, 1841.
Early returned to the military as a major, and served in the Mexican-American war between 1846
and 1848, before going back to his legal career (Osborne, 2012).
During the American civil war, Jubal Early was a senior Confederate General. His bold
raid on Washington DC at the later stages of the war is perhaps what makes him famous during
this reign. This caused tension within the capital and convinced President Lincoln to order
General Grant to send union army to the capital, to conquer early. Having barraged since the
