EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND LEADERSHIP

Introduction
Emotional intelligence or Emotional quotient is the ability of an individual to know his
own emotions as well as those of others. It also includes the ability to discern different feelings
and identify them appropriately. People with high emotional intelligence can use emotional
knowledge to guide their behavior and thinking as well as manage their emotions in different
environments towards a certain goal (George, 2000).
As I take a reflection on myself assessing my emotional intelligence, it has been paramount.
I was born the first in a family of five siblings. My father was a bank manager and my mother a
departmental head in the local college near home. Their occupations being such requiring made
them be away from home most of the times, and this gave me the opportunity to be in charge of
my younger siblings. My leadership skills started developed from as low as this level and grew
gradually and steadily. When I joined lower primary, the class teacher noted my responsible
character, and I was made the class prefect. I also joined the scout movement section for young
children called rabbit. This molded gave me basic leadership qualities and an advantage over
other students. At high and college school, I headed more than six clubs and societies including
the cricket team, the Christians union, the drama club, the Red-cross society, and the science
club. Also, I was the school captain. This platform served as a solid base for my strong
leadership qualities.
Upon completion of my studies, I was absorbed into a manufacturing company where I
had done my attachment, and I was made the head of resource accounting. Two months later I
was promoted to the position of senior manager in charge of the company’s accounts. Within the
next two years, I had risen to the level of the company overall overseer. It is after working for the

company for ten years with many achievements that I decided to join the national politics. I
joined the national congress, and I was elected as the governor. My leadership qualities helped
me maintain my mandate. I had always admired the leadership traits of my father, and he served
as my role model and my mentor throughout my leadership journey. Inborn qualities such as
self-confidence, self-esteem, and patients served as stepping stones in the journey. Among the
many challenges that have faced me in my leadership journey were divided attention, sacrifice
for the welfare of others and failure.
The ability of emotional intelligence has solidified my confidence, and I can now see
myself as a prominent leader in the remaining life partition. I still have a long stretch to roll, and
with the knowledge of emotional intelligence the going is smoother than before, it all about
believing and becoming.
Emotional intelligence and leadership
According to Chemers 1997, leadership can be described as an area of research or a
practical skill involving a person’s ability to stimulate a sense of direction or offer guidance to
other people, groups, and organizations. There are debates based on different viewpoints as
scholars try to contrasting the Eastern leadership approach and the western approach. Under the
American academic context, leadership is defined as "a series of events of social influence where
a person through the support of others induces the direction towards accomplishment a common
set goal. This article gives an explicit review of leadership from the situational theory
perspective. The review is based on a narrative of an interview conducted on one of the leaders
on the subject of transformational change and self-development (Kerr, Garvin, Heaton, & Boyle,
2006).

Assessment of my leadership skills
For use for this assignment, I interviewed my leadership qualities currently in leadership
positions in a leading organization. The purpose of this interview was to try and determine how
leadership is influenced by emotional intelligence and the most appropriate and what skills
different leaders use in different situation. I also wanted to do an assessment and try to deduce
which among the many leadership theory is the most appropriate in explaining the meaning and
nature of leadership.
The interview involved a personal engagement as a leader heading an organization with a
string of branches both physical and virtual. I asked myself what definition I have for leadership.
According to me, the possible definitions for leadership are as many as leaders are. I can
define leadership as the ability and will to bring a group of people together under a common
purpose with the traits that evoke confidence and trust towards a set objective.
I also asked myself what the most important aspect of leadership is.
Most importantly, a leader should focus on the relationship between him and the people in
the group. Social aspects are paramount in leadership. You need to understand the people you
lead so that you can know how to handle them. The orientation or nature of the group can help
determine the appropriate approach to be used. For instance, an organization that suffers from
poor efficiency in production can be best suited by a leadership style that brings order and clarity
of defined roles. On the other hand, a group with highly skilled workers can benefit from
a democratic leadership style that will allow members to work independently and be included in

organizational decisions. I recall a time he averted workers strike by addressing the striking
workers personally one at a time since he understood them.
The Second thing a leader needs to understand and focus on is the nature of the task at hand.
Situations may be simple or complex depending on context, and therefore as a leader, you need
to know exactly what situation you are dealing with so that you can determine what style you can
employ to overcome it.
The position of leadership the leader holds is another important consideration. As a leader,
you have the power by your position to fire, reward, or direct subordinate’s workers. But the real
power is gained through your relationships with the people you lead. Before any decision is
made, a keen assessment should be made on the cause of the situation and the resultant effect. A
variety of methods should be considered and scrutinized to determine which is the most suitable
to use for a certain situation (Cooper & Sawaf, 1998).
The situational theory is a leadership theory that suggests that no one known style
of leadership can be said to be the most appropriate. The theory stipulates that the success of
leadership depends on a particular situation presented by circumstances at hand. Certain
leadership traits and strategies are more suitable for a certain task as per the requirements of the
situation at hand. According to Dr. Hershey, the best leader is the one who can adapt and the
most appropriate style or skill for a particular situation looking into cues such as the type of the
group, the nature of the task at hand as well as other factors contributing to the leading goal.
The Situational theory appeared to address the trait leadership theory. Social scientists argued
times, and situations dictate the person but not person defining the situation. Different situations
require different skills and traits, and no optimal psychographic profile in a person exists. The

action of an individual in a leadership position depends strongly on the manner of the situation
challenging them. For instance, the manager I interviewed demonstrated a situation where he
was able to combat workers strikethrough in his organization through interpersonal skills. This
would however not be solved through other means such as riot dispersal or mass negotiation.
According to the research by Lewin et al., leadership climates, if normalized, can be seen to
fall under three categories. The situational theory can help us identify situations under which
certain style works best. For instance, authoritarian leadership is best suited in times of crisis
though it can’t win the attitude of people in common situation management. On the other hand,
democratic leadership is best for situations requiring consensus building. The third category is
the laissez-faire style most embraced for providing freedom but since leaders don’t "take
charge," they may end up being taken for failures at times of turbulence in organizations (Cooper
& Sawaf, 1998).
For effective leadership, the person in a leadership position needs to come up with a
leadership style that matches the situation at hand and which will contribute to followerdevelopment. With emotional intelligence, leadership trai...
