Question Description

Generate assessment tools which collect data towards supporting and improving children's learning.

In this module, you were asked to read about, review, and research a variety of early childhood assessment methods. Take some time to identify an assessment method that you would like to learn more about.

In a 3-4 page paper, written in APA format, identify the name of the two (2) assessment tools and/or methods you plan on reviewing. Devote at least one (1) full page to each assessment tool, including the following:

  1. The type/method employed by the assessment tools (checklist, anecdotal reports, rating scale, etc.).
  2. An overview of the methods you have chosen which includes the domain(s) the tool focuses on (social-emotional, linguistic, environmental, etc.), and the possible purposes for this assessment (curriculum evaluation, child behavior, language acquisition, environmental influences, developmental screening, etc.). This must be supported by at least two (2) credible references (no blogs!).
  3. Include a 1-page reflection about your research which includes the reason you have chosen these specific tools/methods. Consider:
    • Your own personal style preferences
    • The focus/subject for the information you would like to gather
    • How this tool will support child development
  4. Include visual samples of the tools you selected. Incorporate these images at the end of your written content. You may provide your own images or find appropriate options using the Rasmussen College Library or your favorite Internet search engine.
  5. Your paper should reflect proper spelling and grammar as well as include a References page containing at least two (2) credible references.

All information sources and in-text citations must be done in APA format.

Early Childhood Assessment Tools

Early Childhood Assessment Tools
The assessment of children in their developmental stages is essential to determine a
child’s specific abilities and skills, identify and diagnose any developmental delays, and
determine appropriate intervention strategies if a child is found to have cognitive or
developmental problems. In the learning environment, assessment tools provide educators,
parents, and other stakeholders with information on the development and growth of a child in the
six key developmental areas. There are different assessment tools dedicated to assessing these
areas. The two which stand out most are The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills
(DIBELS) and The High/Scope Child Observation Record (COR).
The High/Scope Child Observation Record (COR)
According to Educational and Psychological Measurement, COR measures the impact of
early childhood education on the developmental status of children aged between two and a half
years and six years (Schweinhart, Mcnair, Barnes & Larner, 1993). The tool’s reliability and
validity as an effective tool in the assessment of early childhood development were proven with
reliability coefficients as high .93 according to sixty-four teams of COR-trained head teachers
and assistant teachers. The assessment tool is the second most widely multidimensional
assessment tool according to Early Education and Development owing to its reliability and
validity, (Barghaus & Fantuzzo, 2014).
COR uses both anecdotal and observational data to determine a child’s level and ability
